Reaching the Parenthood Dream

Parenthood is a blessing, and every person has the right to enjoy and experience becoming a family.

A person or couple enters parenthood when they become a parent; this most likely happens when their child is born. Sometimes reaching this goal can be challenging and it does not matter what type of family you are trying to build as building a family can be a common struggle for female-male parents, female-female parents, and single moms.

Infertility can be one of the challenges in this beautiful journey of parenthood.

Infertility is the inability to conceive after 12 months or more of unprotected sex. The most obvious symptom of infertility is not being able to conceive, but irregular or absent menstrual periods can also be associated with infertility.

Infertility is not uncommon. According to WHO health data, globally 48 million couples have infertility and struggle to conceive. In addition, the CDC reports that 6% of couples in the United States have trouble conceiving, and the rate increases with age.

Infertility is not only a female problem; both men and women can contribute to infertility. One-third of infertility is associated with male infertility, while about 35% of cases are due to a combination of male and female causes So, evaluating both male and female factors is essential to rule out infertility.

Male Related Infertility:

Male infertility can be caused by different factors:

  • Decrease in sperm count or sperm motility.

  • Abnormal morphology of sperm

  • Inability and difficulty in ejaculation.

  • Genetic, hormonal, and physiological disorders.

Male infertility testing includes semen analysis, hormonal testing, genetic scans, imaging, biopsy, and other cause-specific tests. In the semen analysis, the number of sperm (concentration), motility (movement), and morphology (shape) are assessed by a specialist. A slight abnormality in the semen doesn't mean that a man is infertile but it does help determine if and how the male is contributing to the couple's infertility problem.

Female Related Infertility:

Female infertility accounts for 40% of all infertility cases.

To conceive a baby, the mother needs to have a normal function of ovaries, fallopian tube, uterus, and balanced hormonal status. Infertility can be a problem related to:

  • Ovulation (release of an egg)

  • Absence of egg

  • Failure of implantation of the embryo

  • Disturbed menstruation

  • Infection of the reproductive tract

  • Hormonal imbalance

Female infertility diagnostic procedures mainly include:

  • Ovulation testing: evaluates the hormone levels through a blood test

  • Hysterosalpingography evaluates the condition of the uterus and fallopian tubes looking for blockage or other problems.

  • Ovarian Reserve: helps determine the quantity of the eggs available for ovulation

  • Imaging tests

  • Another hormonal testing

Infertility testing is essential for successful fertility treatments.

Becoming a parent is the dream of many people and thanks to science it has open the possibility for many to enjoy.
